Hot water is the part to plan first. From 1 March 2027, when a gas hot water system in an existing home breaks and cannot be repaired, it must be replaced with an electric alternative such as a heat pump, unless an exemption applies. If your gas unit is getting old, planning a heat pump hot water system now avoids a rushed choice when it fails.
Heating is different: as an owner-occupier you are not required to swap a gas ducted heater for electric, even when it reaches end of life. You can keep gas heating and add reverse cycle cooling, or move to reverse cycle for both seasons when it suits. VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrades) rebates may apply where the upgrade is eligible.
