Air conditioning Outer East and Dandenong Ranges
The outer east climbs from the suburban plain around Ringwood, Croydon and Rowville into the Dandenong Ranges, and the climate changes on the way up. At the foot of the ranges, the Bureau of Meteorology’s Coldstream station on the Yarra Valley floor logs 38.7 days of at least 30°C a year and 52.1 days a year with a minimum no higher than 2°C (1994 to 2026). Higher up, the Bureau’s Ferny Creek station in the hills records 14.5 such hot days a year and July maximums that average just 9.8°C, over a shorter 2011 to 2026 record. In the ranges, heating comes first; on the flat, cooling matters just as much.
Bushfire. We checked 18 outer east and Dandenong Ranges suburbs against the state’s bushfire maps, and every one includes land within a designated Bushfire Prone Area. In six, including Belgrave and Emerald, the whole suburb is inside it, and the Bushfire Management Overlay applies in 13. A rooftop evaporative cooler in these areas should carry ember screens with openings of 2mm or less, in line with CFA advice, or you can choose reverse cycle and keep the roof clear.
